Nova Group and LB Plastics Degree of Excellence at Teesside University
Students and staff at Teesside University in Middlesbrough are benefiting from a significantly improved learning and working environment following a large scale window replacement programme with Sheerframe.
The two-phase project at the university's landmark Middlesbrough Tower involved replacing outdated steel curtain walling in the ten-storey building's centre core, which had gone beyond the point of economic repair and couldn't be upgraded to today's thermal requirements. The new high performance Sheerframe curtain walling features 99 tilt and turn windows and fixed lights with argon-filled, warm edge spacer glazed units which reduce heat loss, cut external noise disturbance and improve aesthetics.
In addition to the centre core curtain walling, 72 new Sheerframe floor-to-ceiling windows which feature coloured powder coated steel infill panels below the mid-rail have been installed along the full length of the 10th floor on both elevations.
Both phases involved extensive planning and technical guidance from the technical team at Sheerframe systems manufacturer L.B. Plastics, including the calculation of crucial wind loadings.
Mirukshi Brunton, Assistant Projects Manager at Teesside University said: “The new curtain walling has transformed the look of the building and improved the quality of the internal environment – it is an excellent system, backed by good technical support and advice from L.B. Plastics. We were very happy to have worked with Nova Group Limited as the fabricator and project leader and very pleased with their professional and responsive approach on this refurbishment project.”
Sheerframe curtain walling offers a long term solution which requires little or no maintenance over an expected service life of at least 35 years and, like all Sheerframe PVCu windows, the profile is calcium organic stabilised and free of lead additives.
Sheerframe window systems have been used widely in education refurbishment projects across the UK for three decades, from Victorian primary schools to large 1960s-built comprehensives and newbuild high rise college blocks.
